It is with profound sadness that the Faculty of Science announces the passing of Emeritus Professor Velupillai Tharmaratnam, former Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna.
Professor Tharmaratnam was an eminent scholar and a transformative leader whose contributions have left an enduring imprint on the Faculty and the University at large. Joining the University of Jaffna in the late 1970s after a distinguished tenure at the University of Colombo, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science (1978–1984) during a pivotal period in the faculty’s early development. His leadership was characterised by academic rigour, administrative foresight, and an unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality.
Through his curriculum reforms and dedicated service on statutory bodies, including the Senate, Council, and the University Grants Commission, he played a decisive role in shaping the academic direction of the University. Much of the Faculty’s foundational physical and academic infrastructure was established under his stewardship, laying the groundwork for its long-term growth and recognition within the national academic landscape.
Professor Tharmaratnam was equally revered as a teacher and mentor. His lectures, delivered with precision, originality, and without the aid of notes, cultivated a deep appreciation for Mathematics among generations of students. His scholarly contributions, particularly in the field of Near Rings, alongside his nurturing of promising young mathematicians, enriched both the national and international mathematical community.
Calm, principled, and deeply respected, he embodied integrity and fairness throughout his career. Colleagues, students, and contemporaries admired his wisdom, humility, and steadfast dedication to the University.
As we honour the memory of Emeritus Professor Velupillai Tharmaratnam, we pray for peace upon his soul and strength for his family. His legacy will continue to inspire the Faculty of Science and the generations who follow.
